The Sunday Salon: On Books and Being BlogHer Bound!

This week coming up is a pretty exciting one for me because of this little icon here:

I know ... I don't know what I was thinking when I signed up for this back when there was something like ten feet of snow on the ground.  The closer this gets and the more I read the Twitterstreams of people buying entirely new wardrobes and shoes, the more nerve-wracked I get. Seriously, I don't think I was this nervous before my 20th high school reunion.  I did not inherit the shopaholic gene (my grandmother was the main carrier) for clothes and shoe shopping, so I won't be doing much of that.

But, fortunately, there will be some folks keeping me grounded, and I know that my friend and BlogHer veteran and roommate-to-be Florinda from The 3Rs Blog will be one of them. I'm very much looking forward to meeting her and our plans of visiting book nirvana, also known as The Strand bookstore.

There's at least one booksigning I'm planning to attend, too.  Several of my favorite bloggers (who I consider to be friends) have contributed to a wonderful anthology, Gravity Pulls You In:  Perspectives on Parenting Children on the Autism Spectrum.  It's edited by Kyra Anderson of This Mom and Vicki Forman, author of This Lovely Life, a incredibly inspiring, heartbreaking, and poignant memoir which I read in one sitting last year and cannot find the words to do justice to such an exquisite book as a review.  (Plus, I can't get through the review without crying.)

Several of the Gravity writers will also be at BlogHer'10 (Kristen of From Here to There and Back and Christine from Day Sixty-Seven) so - nerd that I am - I'm planning to bring my copy of Gravity and have as many folks as possible sign it.  Kyra is also doing a booksigning on Saturday, August 7 at the Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas in NYC. She'll be on the second floor from 12:40-1:15 as part of the BlogHer 2010 festivities, so if you're around on Saturday, I know she would love for you to stop by.

Conveniently, it is also right before the panel that Florinda is speaking on (along with moderator Kamy Wicoff of She Writes, who is on my ever-growing "would love to meet" list.)

Since this is still The Sunday Salon, I should probably say something about the book I am reading.  I am absolutely loving NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman.  What an eye-opener of a book.  I really can't put this down and I believe this should be required reading for everyone who is a parent, a teacher, or anyone who cares about the well-being of children. There's so much I am going to need to share about this - it is already Post-It tabbed to the max and I'm only on chapter four - that I think it will need to be separate posts.

And the books accompanying me to BlogHer?  (There will be time to read, if only during my Amtrak ride.)  In addition to the aforementioned Gravity, I am also considering taking Finny, by Justin Kramon and The Liar's Club by Mary Karr.

The "L" key on my laptop is not functioning well, so forgive me if you see me writing about my time at BogHer.  Which makes sense, because I imagine being rather bogged down with swag and books after this trip.

Heh, "BogHer." You're not too far off the mark on that. The "R" key on my MacBook is sticking lately, so I may be posting about "BlogHe," which it's emphatically not.

I'd be bringing books to the signing as well - in fact, I should see if there are any I should be bringing.

We'll have a great time - SO looking forward to it!

Florinda, is there a list somewhere of those doing signings?

Looking forward to seeing you :)
I'm not buying anything but a haircut... which I desperately needed anyway!

I read Nurture Shock last year and loved it!! I still use some of the stuff I learned in there when I'm teaching parenting. (In fact just today I talked about the study they did where parents always praised their kids and told them they were smart)

Robin, I caved and bought a new shirt at Walmart today, of all places. I'm also going to be treating myself to a haircut.

And as for cute shoes? I'm seriously considering wearing my Reeboks.

Well, if it helps any, I have no idea what I'll be packing, and there very well could be Birkenstocks involved, so you'll at least look snazzier than I will. I am going to dye my gray root stripe and get a trim, however. Ooh: I do have to get a few books for the trip. That'll be fun.

Absolutely, Kablooey ... books are a must. The hell with the clothes and the shoes. :)

My copy of NutureShock was stuffed with post it notes when I was done. I have told every parent I know they should read it..
