Given that this week was Election Day here in the States and all eyes were on our White House (and Congress, and the Senate), I thought it might be timely to highlight this little cookbook which I recently picked up at the library.
It might look like a little book, but A White House Garden Cookbook: Healthy Ideas from the First Family for Your Family is bursting with all kinds of interesting information and healthy recipes.
Author Clara Silverstein takes the reader through a year (2009) in the life of the White House Kitchen Garden. It covers the everything from the planning process to the first shovelful of dirt unearthed, to the variety and historical significance of the fruits and vegetables they planted. (Did you know that descendents of seeds planted by Thomas Jefferson are in there? I didn't.) There's a sketched outline of the actual garden and its crops. There are recipes dating back to George Washington's day and favorite dishes from various Presidents and historical trivia. Each of the recipes has an ingredient that can be found in the actual White House Kitchen Garden.
The majority of the recipes presented here are simple and not overly complicated, making them conducive for kids to prepare or to assist a grown-up with the cooking. It includes recipes from community gardens all across America and their stories (and those of the people - especially the kids - involved in the planting) are also part of the narrative.
I didn't have a chance to make any of the recipes from this cookbook before taking it back to the library, but they seem pretty straightforward, fairly uncomplicated, and are grouped according to season and the life of the garden (with perhaps a bit of a heavier emphasis on various greens like Swiss chard, kale, and other leafy vegetables).
